Youth Team Tournament
June 21 & 22, 2008

New toYouthTeamTournament this year:
• All substitutions must be made at or before the advisor’s meeting on June 20, 2008.
• All parade of teams music must be turned in on CD by May 1, 2008.

INFORMATION AND CONDITIONS
All state associations or clubs affiliated with the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) are invited to sponsor a team to represent them in the Youth Team Tournament (YTT). Teams consisting of between two and 20 youth members may be selected by any means appropriate to the club or region they represent. All team members must be 18 years of age or younger as of January 1, 2008. Contestants must be on a team from their ownstate. If a state does not have a team, contestants may join a team from an adjoining state if they are active members of the sponsoring club. The YTT consists of four different team-oriented events:

1. YTT Hippology,
2. YTT Knowledge Relay,
3. YTT Performance Classes and
4. YTT Parade of Teams.

YTT HIPPOLOGY
Saturday, June 21—8 a.m.
The YTT Hippology competition provides an opportunity for youth to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of equine science. One entry, consisting of three or four members per team, is allowed. Participants will each have two minutes to answer questions at each of five different “knowledge stations.” There will be two sets of stations: one set for participants age 13 & under and another set for ages 14-18. Study information and a list of possible station topics for each age division are included on the back page of this brochure.

All youth competing on four-member teams will have the lowest score dropped to determine overall points. No score will be dropped on three member teams. Teams consisting of only one or two participants will not be eligible for team points and awards but may compete for individual awards.

YTT KNOWLEDGE RELAY
Saturday, June 21—9 p.m.
The YTT Knowledge Relay challenges teams to work together to navigate obstacles while displaying their practical horse knowledge.

Teams will be asked to perform a variety of activities and navigate various obstacles, all which relate to horse activities or chores in some way. Examples of obstacles include assembling an English bridle, tacking up a “dummy” horse and filling a water bucket using small cups. The contest is designed to be fun and to encourage team members to work together to complete the course. Teams will consist of five members and are encouraged to have members from each age group, including the walk-trot division.

YTT PERFORMANCE CLASSES
Saturday, June 21—5 p.m.
Team members will participate in five classes: Showmanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Western Horsemanship, Barrel Racing and Walk-Trot Pleasure (Western or English). A maximum of two contestants from each team may compete in any one class. The same contestant may compete in more than one class (excluding Walk-Trot), but a contestant may compete on only one team. The same contestant may show only one horse in a class, but may show more than one horse in the tournament, provided the ownership requirements as described below are met. Youth World Show judges will not be used in any portion of the YTT performance classes.

In performance classes, contestants must be 18 years of age or younger as of January 1, 2008. They must show Regular Registry Paint Horses and conform to ownership rules defined in Rule YP-015 of the 2008 APHA Rule Book. Walk-Trot exhibitors must also conform to ownership rules defined in YP-015.

All horses participating in the tournament must be positively identified using the original registration certificate. Horses without registration certificates will not be allowed to show. Please bring your original registration certificates with you to the Youth Show.

YTT PARADE OF TEAMS
Sunday, June 22—Following Novice Youth Horsemanship
One entry per team is allowed, and all team members may participate. If more than one team per state is represented, each team must have its own entry to earn Parade of Teams points. Entries will be judged on originality, creativity and enthusiasm.

The 2008 Parade of Teams theme is “Paint the Stars.” Teams are encouraged to use props and dress that represent their state or region to depict the theme. The parade will take place in the John Justin Arena. Simple floats are optional but must be non-motorized. In addition, the following rules apply:

1. Props must be provided by the team.
2. For judging purposes, each entry should prominently display its team name and the state represented.
3. No animals or motorized vehicles are allowed in the Parade of Teams.
4. Teams will not be allowed to throw items such as candy or confetti inside the arena or into the stands.
5. Teams may provide their own music for the parade. A CD is due along with YTT entries by May 1, 2008. Cassette tapes will not be accepted.

ENTRIES
All team entries must be received or postmarked
by May 1, 2008. All entry forms must be completed. Please type or print clearly. Provide the name and address of each team member; the horse’s name and registration number; the owner, if different from the team member; and the team member’s relationship to the owner.

The team advisor may designate up to two alternates for each event on the Alternate Entry Form. Changes to the team’s entry will be permitted only as follows:

• Substitutions will be allowed only if they were listed on the alternate entry form for that event.
• A substitution form signed by the team advisor (as listed on the entry form) must be submitted at or before the advisor’s meeting on June 20.
• Performance class substitutions must be a one-horse, one-rider combination.
• In the event of a horse’s illness or injury, a horse substitution will be allowed when accompanied by a veterinarian’s statement. Once a horse is substituted, the original horse may not be shown in any class for the remainder of the World Show.

ENTRY FEE
The YTT entry fee is $100 per team. This fee is inclusive for the entire team, regardless of the number of participants.

STALLS
DO NOT SEND STALL FEES WITH THE ENCLOSED ENTRY FORMS. STALL FEES MUST ACCOMPANY EACH YOUTH’S WORLD SHOW ENTRY. If the youth is not entered in the Youth Show, a stall fee must be paid and should be mailed to the APHA office by May 1, 2008, with a YOUTH WORLD SHOW entry form indicating which team the youth is on and the class(es) in which he or she
is entered. Contact the APHA Performance Department for stalling information at (817) 834-2742, extension 444.

Stall decorations are not a requirement, but teams may decorate their stall area. Those who elect to do so should exercise good judgment and use only fireproof, safe materials that are easy to display and remove. Aisles must be kept clean and free of obstructions. Security and safety of the stall area are the team’s responsibility.

ATTIRE
Teams may wear identical outfits when they appear together and during Team Tournament competition, but this is not a requirement.

POINTS
Placings in the Hippology Contest, Knowledge Relay, Performance classes and Parade of Teams will be used to determine the high-point team. Points in the Hippology Contest, Knowledge Relay and Parade of Teams will be awarded to the top 10 teams in the following manner:

1st place—30 pts. 7th place—18 pts.
2nd place—28 pts. 8th place—16 pts.
3rd place—26 pts. 9th place—14 pts.
4th place—24 pts. 10th place—12 pts.
5th place—22 pts. 11th and below—10 pts.
6th place—20 pts.
(Team must participate to earn points.)

Each Performance class, except Barrel Racing, will be judged by two judges whose scores will be combined for the final placings in each class. There will be 10 placings in each class. First place will receive 10 points, second place 9 points and so on.

TABULATION
After the Hippology Contest, Knowledge Relay, Performance classes and the Parade of Teams have been judged, the number of points earned by each team will be tabulated. The team with the highest number of points will be declared the World Championship Paint Horse Show Youth Team Tournament Champions.

In case of a tie, the following tie-breakers will be used:

• The team placing in the greater number of events.
• The team winning the greater number of events, then the greater number of seconds.
• The team with the fastest time in Barrel Racing.

AWARDS
Each team member and team advisor participating will receive a Tournament memento. Ribbons will be awarded to each of the members of the top 10 Hippology and Knowledge Relay teams. Ribbons will be given to all the members of the top 10 teams in the Parade of Teams. Ribbons through 10th place will be awarded to the individual contestants in each Performance class. The overall first through fifth place teams will also receive special awards.
